BIO-MOON LAB

Bio-Moon Lab is growing different living organisms such as algae and bacteria by transforming and processing their growth where Bio-light is the new terminal. My research enquires about future perspectives in the field of bioluminescence as potential and conscious applications within contemporary art practice. Acknowledging the intention to look at alternative sources of sustainable energy to replace artificial forms of light in the context of contemporary art. Moving further from my painting practice where I recently started to experimenting by introducing led light, I analysed the possibility to replace the artificial light from the led light tube with the Bio light emitted from the Marine bacteria V.Fisheri. The bioluminescence emitted by the marine bacterium Vibrio Fischeri is a particularly dazzling reaction of individual microbial cells coordinating a group behaviour. By studying extensively, the behaviour of the marine bacteria V,Fisheri ,I undertook a numerous series of microbiology experiments at the Grow laboratory at Central Saint Martins. During the exhibition, the public would have the opportunity to interact live during the bioluminescence process and witness the magical transformation. Light is conceptualised as a creative interface where Speculative experimentations are endorsed to creatively manipulating living organisms as the V.Fisheri bacteria to establish a new bridge of communication between contemporary art and Science within the community.

Bio Moon ,Digital print; Tecco Gloss 265gsm paper 60 x 60 cm. The image displays the circadian circle of growth of the light emitted from the bacteria on a petri dish during a 72 hours' time lapse recording process at the Grow Lab. The design is informed by the shape of the Morpho’s butterfly wing.
